Nathan + Grace // 08.28.15

My sister Grace and her husband Nathan have been married 7, almost 8 months now, and I offered to do an "anniversary" session before their anniversary because I have a couple of weddings coming up and needed the practice. Yes, I need lots of practice, all the time. Even the professionals "practice." That's what keeps us photographers on our game, as well as constantly bettering ourselves. As they say, practice makes perfect.

I knew just where I wanted to take Nathan + Grace for their pictures. Dannie and I have walked a lot around Franklin's parks since we moved, so I had seen a lot of beautiful spots that I couldn't wait to utilize. Because summer is coming to an end the sun went down faster than I thought, so we didn't get to use all the spots that I'd hoped, but thankfully we didn't miss sunset! And yes I know, sunset may seem kinda cliche to photographers because that's when every photographer tries to schedule sessions and take pictures, but I love the golden light, and honestly would only take pictures at sunset if it were possible (I also love very early morning and overcast days, but not near as much).

I really do love this couple, and not just because Grace is my sister. She married a man who loves her dearly, and he's also a pretty funny guy, so that made taking their pictures twice as fun and jolly. I love being able to capture, not only a couple's love, but how they interact with each other, and especially their laughter. There is something so beautiful about pure, joyful laughter.

In a society where all the emotional aspects of love are proclaimed, and divorce is immediate once those "feelings" are gone, it is important to realize that marriage- a true lasting marriage- takes more than just two people "in love." Even after all those mushy feelings are gone and we wake up to the reality of being married for life to an imperfect human being who really gets on our nerves, we must then make a huge effort of getting along with and choosing to love our spouse, even when we don't feel the love. I found this poem and thought it fitting.

I once thought marriage took
Just two to make a go,
But now I am convinced
It takes the Lord also.

And not one marriage fails
Where Christ is asked to enter,
As lovers come together
With Jesus at the center.

But marriage seldom thrives,
And homes are incomplete,
Till He is welcomed there
To help avoid defeat.

In homes where Christ is first,
It's obvious to see,
Those unions really work,
For marriage still takes three.

My prayer for Nathan + Grace is that Christ would be the center of their marriage, so that it will thrive and last for 50+ years in a generation where most people don't make it past the first 5-10 years, and that God would continue to bless their marriage as He has thus far. I look forward to seeing what God has in store for them over the coming years!

Now go enjoy all the pictures we had so much fun taking.

As the evening faded away, a gorgeous full moon came out from behind the clouds and showed us its magnificent glory.
